Copilot Studio
Power, without noise. Extensibility, without confusion.
Copilot Studio brings together creation, extension, and governance into a single environment for building AI copilots at scale.
As designer who lead across multiple core initiatives, my work focused on ensuring that growing capability did not come at the cost of clarity.

Timeline
1 Year
Designing a cohesive system for building, extending, and governing AI copilots. Bringing together creation, extensibility, and platform consistency into a single, understandable experience even as the product scaled in capability and complexity.
I designed across conversational plugins, agent connectors, third-party agent management, and a platform-wide revamp. The throughline was a shared interaction model that makes creating, extending, and governing copilots feel coherent as the platform grows. My contribution focused on clarity, predictable lifecycle states, and enterprise trust across these connected surfaces.

Copilot extensions
Opportunity
Copilot Studio was evolving quickly.
New capabilities were being added across:
conversational logic
extensibility
integrations
and agent behaviors
Individually, each feature solved a real need.
Collectively, they risked fragmentation.
The challenge wasn’t feature design.
It was maintaining clarity while the platform expanded.

Connecting and Creating Agent
Design Intent
I anchored my work around four principles:
Unify power through a shared mental model
Make extensibility understandable, not abstract
Design for enterprise scale and governance
Ensure new capabilities feel native, not bolted on
Copilot Studio needed to feel deliberate and not additive.

Landing and Testing
What I Owned
Conversational Plugins
I led design work on how creators define, edit, and reason about conversational plugins the building blocks that give copilots structured, reliable behaviour.
Focus areas:
Clear authoring patterns for intent and responses
Predictable conversational flow
Reduced ambiguity in topic structure
Editing that scales from simple to complex logic
Impact:
Faster authoring of complex conversational flows
Fewer logic errors during testing
Improved comprehension of how copilots respond and why
Extending Copilots with Connectors
I worked on extending agent capabilities through connectors allowing copilots to securely interact with external systems and data.
Design priorities:
Making “capability extension” feel concrete, not technical
Clear affordances for what a copilot can and cannot do
Guardrails for permissions and data access
Confidence during setup and publishing
Impact:
Increased successful connector adoption
Reduced setup errors
Higher trust in copilots operating in enterprise environments
Third-Party Copilot Agents
I contributed to the experience of integrating and managing third-party copilots within Copilot Studio.
Key challenges:
Consistency across first- and third-party agents
Clear ownership and boundaries
Maintaining platform trust while enabling openness
Impact:
Easier onboarding of external agents
Clearer expectations around behaviour and scope
Reduced confusion between native and third-party capabilities
Platform-Wide Design Revamp
Alongside feature work, I drove a broader initiative to improve the overall design quality and coherence of Copilot Studio.
This included:
Visual and interaction consistency across surfaces
Shared patterns for creation, editing, testing, and publishing
Reduced cognitive load in dense workflows
Stronger hierarchy and pacing
Impact:
Improved usability across complex workflows
Faster onboarding for new users
Higher confidence navigating advanced features
Impact
Across the connected areas I designed, the work focused on helping Copilot Studio scale without losing clarity:
Reduced time to build and extend copilots
Fewer configuration and logic errors during testing
Higher adoption of advanced capabilities (plugins, connectors)
Improved confidence in enterprise deployments
More consistent user experience across Copilot Studio
My contribution was to help the platform behave more like a cohesive system than a collection of tools.cohesive platform.
Collaboration and Leadership:
This work required close partnership with:
PMs defining extensibility and AI roadmaps
Engineering teams building orchestration and connectors
Security and governance stakeholders
Design peers across Microsoft
I regularly:
aligned teams on shared UX principles
reviewed designs for cross-surface coherence
identified fragmentation risks early
advocated for simplicity in complex systems
Much of the value came from identifying and preventing fragmentation before it reached the product experience preventing complexity, not reacting to it.
Reflection
Designing Copilot Studio at this level wasn’t about shipping a single feature.
It was about shaping a platform that could evolve without losing clarity.
The most meaningful design work here was quiet:
Aligning mental models
Reducing friction
Making extensibility feel natural
